Renault is planning to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 5 with a “sporty and offbeat” concept at the Paris Motor Show, but the company has already begun testing mules for the reborn hatch that is expected in 2024.

Snapped wearing a Clio body, this mule immediately stands out thanks to its pronounced bumper flares which hint at a wide track. That isn’t the only noticeable change as we can see a charging port has been grafted onto the grille. Underneath, we can get a glimpse of the structure protecting the battery pack.

Under the skin, the Renault 5 will make use of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s CMF-BEV electric platform, which is designed for Volkswagen Polo-sized cars (B-segment or light). A new Nissan Micra electric city car will also be based on the platform beneath the Renault 5, as will be high-performance Alpine version.

The CMF-BEV platform shares bits with the CMF-B platform, which underpins the Renault Captur and Nissan Juke crossovers, and promises to cut the price of new electric cars by one third.
